Medical City Bariatric Program

Types of Surgical Procedures
More bariatric surgical procedures are developed every year. One way to be sure you choose correctly is to consult with a team who offers a full range of surgical options. Medical City performs:

  • Restrictive procedures that make the stomach smaller. An example includes laparoscopic gastric banding ("lap-band").

  • Combination operations that employ restriction and malabsorption (reducing the amount of intestine in contact with food). An example is laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure.

  • A new procedure includes laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (a restrictive procedure).

Medical City doesn't only have specialists in one or two of these techniques. Our team includes bariatric surgeons who have expertise in all of them. Medical City currently has the longest continuous history of successful bariatric surgery outcomes in Dallas. We can help you select the course of treatment that best suits your needs.

Open Gastric Banding
– A band of special material is placed around the upper end of the stomach. This creates a small pouch and narrow passage into the rest of the stomach.

Laparoscopic Gastric Banding (or Lap-Band) – Approved by the FDA in June 2001, this is a less invasive procedure in which smaller incisions are made to apply an inflatable band that can be adjusted over time.

Gastric Bypass – An open Roux-en-Y procedure that creates a small stomach pouch with staples or a vertical band to restrict food intake. A Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the first and second segments of the small intestine to reduce the body's ability to absorb nutrients and calories.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass – Roux-en-Y procedure done with a laparoscopic instead of the traditional way of open surgery. This procedure is much less invasive.

Vertical Banded Gastroplasty
– This common procedure creates the pouch with both a band and staples.
